开心.**********************************************************Dear INCAS friends,on the upcoming Tuesday, June 12th, INCAS presents the „Country Evening Taiwan“. Unfortunately, the term „Country Evening“ has led to some dispute among the students at RWTH due to the issue concerning the political status of the Republic of China/Taiwan. Based on a temporary compromise with Taiwanese and Chinese students the event was renamed as „Cultural Evening“. The following statement reasons why we now adhere to the event’s original title.First of all, we would like to assert that INCAS as an intercultural center has no intention of intervening in the political conflict as such or of taking either side.In particular the German dictionary gives a very broad definition of the translation of the word „country“. Therefore, INCAS regards the term to be applicable also in the case of Taiwan. The German State references Taiwan as a country, too. E.g., the German Office of Foreign Affairs includes Taiwan in its list of countries [1]. German residence permits of Taiwanese citizens even state Taiwanese as a Nationality.Another reason for maintaining the original event name is the fact that the Country Evening Taiwan forms part of a long-lasting series of INCAS events under the same title. This series includes other events like the „Country Evening Palestine“, the „Country Evening North Germany“ or the „Country Evening Europe“ just recently. Considering the lack of recognition by the UN, it is equally disputable to refer to Palestine as a „country“ as in the case of Taiwan. The two latter events underline further that INCAS does not use the term to express any recognition of an independent state. According to its statutes, INCAS must either way be politically, ideologically and religiously neutral and tolerant. Based on the previous arguments we regard this neutrality in the current case as provided. As an intercultural center, INCAS is aware of the complexity of intercultural communication and always striving for tolerance. It is thus clear to us that even though we regard the term „Country Evening“ as neutral, this may be perceived differently by some people. This holds even more under consideration of the strong emotions that are connected to the topic for many of the people involved. However, after careful assessment we deem it the only acceptable solution the uphold the event‘s original title of „Country Evening“. Anything else would mean an unequal treatment and therefore discrimination of Taiwanese citizens.
